Hakima Tafunzi Payne MSN RN is available to speak on the topic of Black maternal and infant health and Black doulas serving Black communities.

 

Ms. Payne is a passionate advocate for perinatal health equity and community empowerment. Ms. Payne has lived experience of the racism and discriminatory maternity care faced by her community. Her experiences as a teen mom, a homebirth mom and later as a labor and delivery nurse sparked her commitment to addressing racism and promoting equitable healthcare solutions. Hakima has a Bachelors degree in Nursing and a Master’s degree in Nursing Education. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Nursing where her focus is on creating doula curriculum, doula policy and the exploration of doula science.

Throughout her academic journey, Ms. Payne has been steadfast in supporting Black maternal and infant health through a community-based nonprofit she founded in 2012, devoted to addressing perinatal health injustice.

​

As an influential thought leader, Hakima Tafunzi Payne has presented at numerous conferences and has written extensively on the impacts of perinatal racism, and moving healthcare ecosystems toward radical antiracism. Her work focuses on the impact of systemic racism on healthcare outcomes and the strategies needed to dismantle racism in healthcare on both the interpersonal and systemic levels.

Ms. Payne’s work goes beyond academic research and advocacy. She actively engages with community members and power structures, conducting workshops and training programs to empower individuals and organizations to become radically antiracist within their own ecosystems. Her approach centers around creating strategies for building AWARENESS, creating a thorough ANALYSIS, assigning ACCOUNTABILITY and moving with intention toward restorative ACTION
